8 Things That Can Ruin Your Smile
Max Eastman said, “A smile is the universal welcome.” But if you don’t take care of your smile, you definitely are not going to want to show it off to others. In fact, you may even try to hide your smile.
But you don’t have to do that. You just need to take care of your smile and be aware of the things that can ruin it. When it comes to keeping your smile its healthiest, be mindful of these things that can make your smile not so happy.
- Not practicing proper oral hygiene.
If you’re not brushing twice per day, flossing daily, and visiting your dentist regularly, you are putting your mouth at risk.
- Drinking soda, sports drinks, wine, and/or coffee.
With their sugar and high acidic nature, these drinks can erode your teeth’s enamel, leaving you prone to cavities and other dental problems.
If you have diabetes, you are at higher risk for gum disease because diabetes reduces your body’s ability to fight infections.
- Smoking and tobacco use.
Smoking and tobacco use can turn your teeth yellow, but it can also lead to cancer, gum disease, and tooth loss.
- Grinding your teeth.
If you grind your teeth, you may find that you weaken the enamel, chip your teeth, or experience sensitivity.
- Consuming sugary treats.
When you eat sugary treats, the bacteria in your mouth feed on the sugar. This, in turn, can lead to tooth decay and gingivitis.
- Poor eating habits.
If you are not eating a well-rounded diet, you may experience vitamin and mineral deficiencies which can affect your oral health.
- Gum disease.
If gum disease is not treated, you may experience receding gums or tooth loss, which can lead to a less than desirable smile.
Take note of how you’re taking care of your smile. After all, you want your smile to last a lifetime.
