Dentist, Orthodontist, Periodontist, and Endodontist - What Do They Do?

Who are the members of your health team? You probably have a primary care physician. You may see some specialists such as a dermatologist, ophthalmologist, or allergist. You most likely also have a dentist you visit for regular checkups. But do you know that there are specialists in the field of dental care that might also be of help to you?

Just like your primary care physician may refer you to a specialist, your dentist may do the same. Here’s a look at some of the people who may be involved in keeping your mouth happy and healthy.

Dentist

Your dentist is like your primary care physician for your mouth. You see them to help you with the overall care of your mouth. They perform regular checkups and diagnose and treat problems with your oral health. They perform cleanings and can do treatments such as fillings, crowns, and veneers.

Orthodontist

A common specialist within the dental field is an orthodontist. An orthodontist works to treat misalignments of your teeth or jaw. Orthodontists work to straighten teeth, expand your palate, or correct the alignment of your jaw so that you do not experience issues with your bite further down the road.

Periodontist

A periodontist is another specialty in the field of oral health. A periodontist works to treat gum disease. Additionally, they can help with dental implants, gum surgery, and other advanced treatments that may be necessary if periodontal disease has caused significant damage to your teeth and gums.

Endodontist

If you’ve ever experienced severe tooth pain, you may have been referred to an endodontist. An endodontist is a specialized dentist who works to diagnose tooth pain and performs root canals. They often try to save the tooth so that an implant or dentures will not be necessary.

Just like other doctors that your primary care physician may refer you to, your dentist may send you to other specialized dentists to assist with your oral health care. Know that, like your dentist, these specialists want what’s best for your mouth and will work to provide you with excellent treatment.
